Obituary for Lois M. Ritter

Lois M. Ritter, age 89, of Island Lake, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018, at her home with her family by her side. She was born October 24, 1928 in Chicago, to Howard and Rose (Oertel) Simpson. On October 4, 1947, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Chicago, Lois married the love of her life, Robert R. Ritter Sr., after his service in World War II. They enjoyed 70 wonderful years together.

Lois was the mother everyone wish they had. She dedicated her life to her family. She worked at the Telephone Company and the Office of City Physicians in Chicago, so she could help send her children to Catholic School. Not only was Lois loved by her family, but also by the neighborhood. She was known to give the neighborhood children popsicles when getting off the bus and ice cream cones on the last day of school. Lois’ smile would light up a room and comfort anyone in need. She enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles, and make an occasional trip to a casino or Plum Garden.

Lois was always content with her life, never wanting more than what she had. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling to Florida with her husband in their Fifth Wheeler. Lois was an incredible seamstress, never using a sewing machine, always hand stitched with love. She would design clothing for her granddaughters American Girl Dolls’, making them matching outfits, or using their old dresses to create new ones. Lois was loved by so many, and will remain in their hearts forever.

Lois is survived by her adoring husband, Robert R. Ritter Sr.; four children, Elizabeth (William) Valko, Judith Ritter, Carol (Maynard) Ostrowski, Robert R. Jr. (Diane) Ritter; twelve grandchildren, George, Andrew (Sara), Melanie, Amber, Anthony (Amy), Thomas (Heather), Jillian (Jim), Nicholas, Margaret, Robert R. III (Amy), Jacqueline (Lee), William; fourteen great-grandchildren, Alexa, Noah, Demetra, Drake, Alexis, Miranda, Elizabeth, Isabella, Cristopher, Jackson, Greysen, Evan, Silas, Jillian, and two on the way.

In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Ryker, three brothers, and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
