Obituary for Margaret L. "Midge" Scharf

Margaret L. “Midge” Scharf, age 99, of McHenry, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at her home.

Born February 10, 1918 in Rockford, Midge was the daughter of William and Susan (Weber) Bishop. Raised and educated in McHenry, she attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated in 1935 with the first graduating class of the then newly constructed McHenry Community High School.

Following high school, Midge moved to Chicago and worked for the C&NW Railroad. She married and welcomed her first child at age 21. Her husband’s job required relocations, with one being a move to Dayton, OH for a time. Along with her son, Midge moved back to her hometown of McHenry in 1943 after divorcing, where she was employed as an operator for the telephone company, and later worked in the phone company’s business office. It was several years later in McHenry that she reconnected with a friend from her teen years, Lloyd Scharf, who would become her husband. They married on June 14,1952, and grew their family with the addition of a daughter, Mary. Midge and Lloyd enjoyed 38 years of marriage until his death on January 7, 1991.

Midge was active for many years with the American Legion Auxiliary, where she devotedly served as member and chair of the Americanism Committee, overseeing the essay contest for area high school students. During her lifetime she also enjoyed dancing, going for walks, and most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving family, including her son, Thomas (Darlene) Michelsen of McHenry and her daughter, Mary (Pat) O’Donnell of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren, Mary (Scott) McReynolds, Robin Vanderwiel, Karen (Gary) Russell, Rick (Rose) Michelsen, Tim (Larry Breidenbach) Michelsen, Megan (Seth) Weis and Kevin O’Donnell; great grandchidren, Josh, Jason, Jake, Jordan, Nick, Amy, Steven, Angela, Grace, Emerson and Evan; great-great-grandchildren, , Amelia and Travis; and several sisters and brothers.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Lloyd, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael Vanderwiel in 1999 and Thomas Michelsen Jr. in 2005; as well as a brother and sisters.

The visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume Saturday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. prayers, then leaving for the 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry, IL. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, McHenry.

For those wishing to honor Midge’s memory, her family suggests memorial tributes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Masses in her memory.
