Obituary for Roman A. Shaban

Roman A. Shaban, age 72, of Round Lake Beach, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville, IL. He was born April 2, 1946 to Ukrainian immigrants, Wasyl and Olga (Diakiw) Shaban, in Vienna, Austria. On October 3, 1970, Roman married the love of his life, Connie F. Benko, at St. Nicholas Ukranian Catholic Cathedral in Chicago, followed by the most wonderful reception to celebrate their newly united life.

With his family, Roman immigrated to Chicago from Austria when he was about 3 years old, where he grew up on the Northwest side. In his younger years, Roman found joy in playing the violin. He was a graduate and member of the swim team at Holy Name Cathedral High School and earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from SIU of Carbondale. Shortly after marriage, Roman and Connie relocated to the Round Lake Beach area, where they raised their family. Despite the very long commute, Roman continued to work for the Chicago Sun Times for 30 years. In the years after his retirement, Roman donated his time daily to the Avon Food Pantry.

He had the uncanny ability to enjoy life to the fullest, no matter what life threw his way. His larger than life personality and infectious smile would brighten anyone's day. No party with Roman was dull. In fact, he could spice up any party with his booming laugh, hilarious jokes, and dance moves that made everyone envious. He was deeply involved in the recovery community, touched countless lives, and made numerous friends through his many contributions to the community.

Roman was an aficionado of everything James Bond. He watched every Bond movie several times, collected all the soundtracks, and listened to them around the house, along with his other musical favorites, the BeeGees and the Beatles. Among other things, Roman was a classic car enthusiast with a special appreciation for Volkswagens. On any given day, he could be found in the garage, working on his cars after work.

A true family man, Roman made sure his family knew exactly how much he loved them and was happiest when involved in family activities. As an avid swimmer, he patiently taught all his children how to swim in the backyard pool. Roman, an outdoorsman, enjoyed the calmness of fishing, and took yearly camping trips with his children.

Roman was an extraordinary man. An adoring husband, loving father, caring grandfather, fond brother, wonderful friend to many, Roman has left his family with many wonderful memories to cherish forever.

Roman will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Connie; son, Michael Shaban; four daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) Hazelwood, Erin (Jon) Aunet, Kristen (Derrick) Edwards, Michelle (Dan Johnson) Shaban; six grandchildren, Mia, Roman, Eliassen, Emerett, Teya, Jameson; two brothers, Walter (Lorna) Shaban, George (Jean) Shaban; his nieces and nephews, Alicia, John, Kristopher, George, Alex, Erik; and his faithful furry companions, Elvis and Vivianna.

In addition to his parents, Roman will be joining his three sisters who passed in infancy, and his favorite pooches, Nikki and Max.
