Obituary for Sam Marsella

Sam Marsella, age 96, of McHenry, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Alden Terrace of McHenry.

He was born April 17, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Dominic and Jennie (Vicconti) Marsella. Married as a young man to his first love, Bertha, Sam was married for only a short time before becoming a widower by the age of 20. In 1941, Sam moved from Pittsburgh to Chicago, along with his family. Shortly thereafter, Sam was drafted for service in World War II. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the European Theater.

Following his military service, Sam returned to Chicago, where he became a buyer for the Admiral Corporation. When his family moved from Chicago to Round Lake in 1953, Sam joined the rest of his family in making the move to the suburbs. Another move followed in the early 60's, when Sam moved to McHenry, where he and his siblings owned and operated the Green Pearl restaurant. They ran the restaurant until the sale of the restaurant in 1971, and Sam went to work for Black Dot printing in Crystal Lake until he retired.

Sam was an avid fisherman, and loved to watch Chicago sports teams in his leisure time. He also enjoyed trips with family members to Arlington Race Track to watch the horse races.

Sam is survived by his brother, Dominic Marsella; two nieces, Barbra Rotroff, Mary Rose O’Connell; and two great-nieces, Monica Gurgiolo, and Donnaly Vojta.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha; his brother, Joseph Marsella; and two sisters, Mary Gurgiolo and Jennie Dazzo.
