Obituary for Vivian Mae Gundlach

Vivian Mae (Schmidt) Gundlach (age87) of Spring Grove, IL died Saturday, February 17, 2018 while under the care of Mercyhealth Home and Hospice at the home of her daughter, Diane (Stanley) Zyskowski.

Vivian was born July 5th, 1930 in Oshkosh, WI to Viola (Bauer) and Charles Schmidt. She graduated from Oshkosh High School and was fortunate in receiving a full nursing scholarship for training at St. Vincent DePaul Orphanage, Chicago, IL. She graduated as an infant nurse and cared for many children at St. Vincent’s Asylum for unwed mothers. While in Chicago, she met her husband, Daniel Gundlach and was married 3 months later on November 25, 1950. They were married for 63 years before Daniel became ill and passed January 2014.

Vivian was involved in a variety of community efforts. At one time she was a member in the St. Alphonsus Adult Choir and would substitute as an organ player when needed. She also enjoyed bowling a perfect 300 game and then partook in the 5th frame to celebrate her victory. Vivian was often seen crafting in needlepoint efforts and has a library of needlepoint portraits hung up in her family home which were enjoyed by her immediate family and friends.

She was the Mother of five children, Daniel M. (Debbie) Gundlach, Paulette M. Gundlach, Diane V. (Stanley) Zyskowski ,Patricia P. Gundlach and William P. (Jean) Gundlach, grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of 8.

She is preceded in death by her 4 siblings, Harold (Dorothy)Schmidt, Ruby (Mac)McGinnis, Franklin (Evie) Schmidt and Ruth Schmidt, and her sole surviving sister, Carol (Ralph)Bloechl.

Friends are invited to gather before the Mass for Vivian held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Johnsburg, IL.
